Ms. Melody’s Wild Ride

Despite taking the PR circuit for roller derby and my own freelance business by storm the past couple of weeks, I’ve managed to squeeze in some time to study for my personal training certification—which thrills me to no end. This is what I’ve been waiting for.

It’s going to be an intense—and hopefully semi-quick—journey for me as I study study study, take endless amounts of quizzes, complete my CPR course and end it all with a giant final exam that will prepare me for what I truly believe will be one of the most fulfilling choice I’ve made to date. (Well, working with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity and the ALS Association have been pretty fulfilling, too. But that’s all been volunteer work.)

One of the statistics I found when I first took this plunge solidified this decision for me, though, and it has stuck with me like glue.

In a renowned study of 17,000 Harvard graduates, it was determined that not exercising had the equivalent impact on your health as smoking one and a half packs of cigarettes a day.

That is appalling! And what’s worse is this: 25% of Americans remain sedentary. One in four people might as well be chain smokers.

I am not perfect when it comes to diet and exercise. At least not yet. But I see this exciting path ahead of me, and I’m ready for it. I absolutely cannot wait to take on this challenge of helping people change their lives.

It’s going to be one fun ride.
