Adventures in Denver

The KCRW All Stars are in the midst of a trip to Denver for a full roller derby weekend. Any time we have bout weekends, I always expect I’ll be exhausted. But this weekend has been a bit over the top.

It started with our flight. Our original flight was supposed to leave at 7:45 pm. But storms in the east coast started bumping back our flight times. We were told there was a possibility we’d make it on another flight, so most of us were there by 7. We ended up not flying out until 12:30 in the morning.

So what do a bunch of rollergirls in an empty airport and hours of waiting do? Why, roller skate, of course!

KCI became our playground as we skated up and down the halls. We had the pleasure of meeting a TV crew who was filming a pilot in the hopes of getting their show picked up, and right after Jade Lightening did a power slide and stopped just inches in front of the camera, they came to interview us, saying it must have been serendipitous that they stumbled across us during their venture. Indeed.

We finally made it to Denver and got into our hotel around 2 am, after losing an hour.

We were up bright and early this morning and after a quick venture out into town with the team, I met up with my wonderful friend Lynn, who took me to the vegan heaven that was Watercourse Foods. Then, off to her super modern apartment in downtown Denver for tea and great conversation. It was perfect.

And then, the whole reason we came: bout time! We headed to the Fillmore Auditorium — where folks like Iggy Pop, Billy Idol, and Beck have played — to warm up and get ready to play the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls.

All I can say is this venue was amazing. And I got to see other friends from my Springfield days, which rounded out my evening quite beautifully.

We didn’t end up winning, but we all learned a lot. And tomorrow, Denver.

Wish us luck! The Wolfpack would like to get back on our winning streak.
